Every once in a while, a DVD or Blu-Ray drive starts to go on the fritz. Sometimes video gets choppy or a brand new disk doesnât even get recognized. Maybe once you put in a disc the drive starts spinning but the disc is never available on your computer.

Dust â An Optical Driveâs Worst Enemy
Even though a DVD or Blu-Ray drive is mostly enclosed, dust still has an opportunity to invade through small openings and also while the drive is open. This depends heavily on how dusty the environment is but it can really wreak havoc on a drive.
In my experience, when a drive gets dusty, a disc will either take a long time to read initially or it will show random errors and slowdowns while the disc is being read from.
It helps to know how a optical drive, such as a CD, DVD or Blu-Ray drive works to know why this happens. The disc is a round plastic disk with a shiny reflective coating on the top and several layers of plastic. The way data is read from the drive is that there is a tiny laser which shoots up onto the disc, and depending on the configuration of the plastic and reflective layer, data is returned and read back to the drive. In reality it is much more complicated than that, but at the core this is what is happening.
When dust gets into the drive, specifically around the laser, it can block or refract that light causing a number of errors to be returned, and make the drive and/or disc unreadable.
There are several ways to get rid of dust. The first is with compressed air. It is available at many stores and is very cheap to buy. Installing cac reader for mac. You can also get a special optical drive cleaner disk. This is comprised of a disc with tiny little brushes on it. The DVD disc usually has a program on it to ensure that the laser read head will move over the brushes several times to clean off any dust.
Disc Scratches
Most of the time, the drive isnât even the problem! Discs become scratchedHow to Read Scratched CDs or DVDs in WindowsHow to Read Scratched CDs or DVDs in WindowsDo you have scratched discs that your computer can't read? Don't despair! Here's how to read scratched CDs and DVDs in Windows.Read More fairly easily and this can cause a lot of read problems on the drive. The way to check is two-fold:
- visually inspect the disc to see if there are any scratches.
- check the drive with another disc, alternatively try the disc in another drive.
Once you have confirmed the disc is scratched you can try a few things to fix the problem. Pdf ebook reader for mac.
The first is to use a wet or dry cloth to clean the disc. Use circular motions to clean it, or wipe from out-to-inside or inside to out. Never wipe in the direction around the tracks, as this can cause track skippage and actually make the problem worse.
The second is to use some sort of abrasive compound, such as toothpasteGeeks Weigh In: Can You Fix A Scratched CD With Toothpaste?Geeks Weigh In: Can You Fix A Scratched CD With Toothpaste?Read More (not gel) to grind out scratches. Iâve never actually used this method but I have heard it works well.
The final one, and preferred, is to use a motorized disc cleaner. They are available from retail stores for about $20-$30 and automate the above procedures for maximum effect. I think this is the safest way to clean a disk, as there is less chance of human error.
Is Your Firmware Old?
Sometimes there are bugs within the firmware of the optical drive. The firmware is like an operating system for the drive, telling it when to spin, where to move the read/write head, and so on. Sometimes this is a last ditch effort but updating the firmware has raised several drives from the dead for me.
Check the manufacturerâs website to see if there are firmware updates. It might involve burning a CD with the firmware and rebooting the computer or player off of the disc, or there might be a way to update it right in your normal OS â it just depends on the manufacturerâs process.

If you have a Blu-Ray drive â in your PC or as a Home Theater component â then there is a good chance you will need to flash new firmware. This is due to the encryption keys stored on the drive. New protections are put out all of the time on new discs and if you have an older drive you simply might not have the right keys to decrypt the disc. A sign of this is if you have no problem playing older Blu-Rays, but new ones simply donât work.
Is It A Hardware Problem?
Finally if all else fails, you could simply have a hardware problem. This goes anywhere from a cable that was unseated, to a bad drive or motherboard connection somewhere down the line.
The first step is to try a new cable and connection port on the motherboard to see if that fixes your problem. If it doesnât you can try to plug another know-good drive in to see if the problem is coming from the old drive or the motherboard.
If it turns out that your DVD or Blu-Ray drive is bad, then it is bad. You can try to send it in for warranty service, but depending on the age of the drive and how much it would cost to replace it, it could just make sense to buy a new one. Buying a new one has other benefits: faster access times, transfer speeds and new features.
Whatever the issue, the steps above should be enough to try to fix your DVD drive on your own. Let us know your own tips and tricks to reviving zombie DVD drives!

I bought it brand new and the disk have no scratches on them, I've transferred disks 1-most of 15 to itunes without any problems with sound. I even transferred my 16th disk without any problems. I played the last section on my bluray player and I have no problems with playing these tracks. I just used memorex Lens Cleaner and those last 3 tracks still don't play correctly. I don't know what to do? Need advice desperately.

This is not typically a problem with the drive - but with the software. From what I know of it, the probably is caused either by mismatched framerates on the movie, or possibly an error in the source or encoder. Check to make sure the framerate on the video matches up to the actual source. You might want to try ripbot264 at the link below. I've always had good luck with it. [Broken Link Removed]

If the disk just keeps on spinning and never load up, could be an auto start program that the OS is blocking.Just hold the SHIFT key while loading up, and disk will stop soon - no auto load of programs or bootloaders

I have a computer as a media center box. I've also kept a DVD player for those discs that simply will not play in the computer drive, even using many of the tips above. Is there an inherent difference in the two drives or the laser/pickup used?
-
Are they blu-rays or DVD discs? DVDs should play in both, but I have found an odd disk that one play in one player or another - but works fine in another one. There may be a different in the types of discs that they accept, such as + or -, but typically modern drives ready either readily.

Rubbing a thin layer of smooth peanut butter on a disc and wiping it off with a dry towel seems to work great. I've fixed 95% of my failing discs with peanut butter. And it tastes good too.

Never heard of using peanut butter, but the grit should be enough to polish out small imperfections in the disk. Good to hear!

Appleâs MacBook Air, along with many other Macs, no longer includes an optical drive. But you can still use CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and other optical discs on your Mac.
The tricks here are similar to how youâd access an optical drive on a Windows UltraBook or similar PC that doesnât include an optical drive of its own.
Option 1: Get an External Drive
![Mac Blu Ray Player For Windows Use Standard Dvd Reader Mac Blu Ray Player For Windows Use Standard Dvd Reader](https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1PAWCSVXXXXa7XVXXq6xXFXXXT/USB3-0-Bluray-Drive-External-CD-DVD-RW-Burner-BD-ROM-3D-Optical-Drive-Writer-slim.jpg_640x640.jpg)
RELATED:How to Share CD & DVD Drives Over the Network on Windows
An external optical drive will allow you to access discs on your Mac. To do this, youâll need to buy an external disc reader that plugs into your Mac via a USB cable. Such an external drive could read CDs and DVDs, play Blu-Rays, and even burn discs â if thatâs what you want. You can leave a drive like this on your desk at home or take with you in your laptop bag.
Apple offers their own external drive known as the Apple USB SuperDrive. It plugs into a Mac via a USB cable and allows you to both read and write CDs and DVDs. It doesnât have Blu-Ray support, so youâll need to find another external drive if you care about that. Appleâs isnât the only option â you can also buy third-party ones, and youâll find many of them on Amazon and elsewhere.
If you have multiple Macs, such an external drive will allow you to plug it into any Mac youâre using, getting the benefits of optical disc support when you actually need it.
Option 2: Use Remote Disc Sharing
Luckily, itâs possible to use discs without buying an external drive thanks to the built-in Remote Disc feature. A Mac or Windows PC on your network can function as a server, and your Mac can access discs inserted into that server. The appropriate server software is included on a Mac, so youâll just have to enable it. Apple also provides free remote disc server software for Windows PCs. As long as you have another computer with an optical drive on your network, you can use its optical drive from your Mac.

Important Note: Apple notes that many types of discs wonât work with the Remote Disc feature. This includes DVD movies, audio CDs, copy-protected discs, operating system installation discs, and blank discs you want to burn to. In other words, this feature only allows you to access the files on a data disc over a network from within Mac OS X. Youâll need an external drive to do anything else.
Best Dvd Blu-ray Player For Windows 10
First, youâll need to set up the server on a remote computer with a disc drive. Assuming the computer with a disc drive you want to share is a Mac, click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and click the Sharing icon. Activate the âDVD and CD Sharingâ option in the Sharing list. (This option will only be visible if your Mac has an optical drive.)
If itâs a Windows PC, youâll need to download and install the DVD & CD Sharing Update for Windows from Appleâs website. After you have, open the Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click DVD or CD Sharing Options. Check the âEnable DVD or CD Sharingâ box here.
Once youâve enable the remote disc sharing on either a Mac or Windows computer, you can open the Finder on your Mac without a disc drive. Click the âRemote Discâ option under Devices in the sidebar and youâll see any Mac or Windows PC sharing a disc on your network. Depending on your settings, you may have to agree to a request on the remote PC before you can access its disc.
Be sure to insert the disc into the remote drive before you try to access it!
If You Donât See the Remote Disc
Mac Go Blu-ray Player For Windows
If you donât see the Remote Disc option, ensure both computers are on the same local network. Firewall settings could also prevent remote-disc sharing from functioning. On your router, ensure no kind of âisolationâ feature is enabled that will prevent the computers from communicating.
If youâre sharing a disc from a Mac, open the System Preferences window, click the Security & Privacy icon, and click the Firewall tab. Ensure the firewall is off, or â if itâs enabled â head into it settings and ensure the remote-disc sharing service is allowed through the firewall.
If youâre sharing a disc from a Windows PC, ensure both the âODSAgentâ and âRemoteInstallMacOSXâ processes are allowed through your firewall. This should automatically be configured with the default Windows Firewall, but you may need to configure it manually if youâre using third-party firewall software.
Remote disc sharing may not be perfect, but sharing a disc over the network has the same limitations on Windows. Youâll need to purchase an external disc drive and connect it directly to a Mac or Windows PC without an optical drive if you want all the features an optical drive offers.
